ASTM A182 Forged Fittings are pipe fittings forged from alloy, stainless steel, or duplex materials.ASTM A182 Forged Pipe Fittings are critical components of industrial piping systems used for making connections and redirecting flow, especially for high temperature service environments. Manufactured by the forging or rolling process, these fittings’ superior mechanical properties and corrosion resistance make them the preferred choice for a variety of high-pressure, high-temperature applications.
During the manufacturing process, ASTM A182 forged fittings are subjected to multiple steps, including material selection, forging, heat treatment, machining and inspection. Forged fittings typically have high dimensional accuracy and surface quality to meet stringent engineering requirements and service environments. Overall, ASTM A182 Forged Fittings is a high quality, high performance piping connectors, widely used in oil, gas, chemical and electric power industries in the piping system that need to withstand high temperature and high pressure.
What are forged fittings?
Forged fittings are the fittings made by forged steel. The process of manufacturing forged steel fittings include: cutting and heating billets, put pressure on heated billets under dies into desired shape, trimming and shot blasting. Then machine forged blank fittings for net shape and dimensions.
According to the applications of forged steel fittings, they are available in threaded and socket weld end connections. The dimensions for socket weld forged steel fitting conform to ASME B16.11 and threaded forged steel fittings conform to ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) B1.20.1.
Types of products covered by ASTM A182
1. Flanges – used to connect pipes, valves, pumps and other equipment in piping systems.
2. Forged fittings – including elbows, tees, reducers, caps and unions used in high-pressure systems.
3. Valves – used to control the flow of fluids in high-temperature environments.
4. Other forged or rolled products – including valves and fittings used in steam, gas and other high-pressure systems.
ZIZI manufactures these products in a variety of sizes, materials and configurations to ensure they meet your specific application needs.
Manufacturing process
Material Selection: According to the required chemical composition and mechanical properties, select the appropriate alloy steel or stainless steel raw materials.
Forging: The steel is heated above the recrystallization temperature and then forged into the desired shape by hammering or pressing. The forging process refines the grain structure and improves the strength and toughness of the material, enabling it to withstand higher pressures and stresses.
Heat Treatment: After forging, fittings require appropriate heat treatment to eliminate internal stresses, optimize grain structure and achieve desired mechanical properties. Types of heat treatment include normalizing, quenching, tempering, solution treatment, etc., depending on the grade of steel.
Machining: Machining of forgings to achieve the final size, shape and connection.
Inspection: Strict quality control and inspection are essential, including visual inspection, dimensional inspection, non-destructive testing and mechanical property testing to ensure that the products meet the standard requirements.

ASTM A182 Alloy Steel
The alloy steel grades in the ASTM A182 standard are typically chromium-molybdenum steels (Cr-Mo steels), which have chromium (Cr) and molybdenum (Mo) added to improve high-temperature strength, creep resistance, and corrosion resistance. These steels usually require heat treatment to achieve the desired mechanical properties.
