Hastelloy C276 is a nickel-based alloy that belongs to the Hastelloy family. It consists primarily of nickel, chromium and molybdenum, with small amounts of iron, tungsten, cobalt and other elements. Compared to other nickel-based alloys, Hastelloy C276 has an extremely high resistance to oxidation and reductive corrosion due to its unique combination of chemical compositions, and performs particularly well in acid-containing and high-temperature environments. Especially at extreme temperatures, Hastelloy C276 exhibits favorable mechanical properties, including tensile strength, yield strength and toughness. Understanding the mechanical properties of Hastelloy C276 at different temperatures is critical to proper material selection and safe equipment operation.

Chemical Composition
Nickel (Ni): Residual (approx. 50-60%). As the primary element, nickel forms the matrix of the alloy, giving it overall corrosion resistance, ductility and high-temperature strength.
Molybdenum (Mo): 15.0 – 17.0%. High levels of molybdenum are essential to give the alloy excellent resistance to pitting, crevice and total corrosion in reducing environments such as hydrochloric, sulfuric and phosphoric acids.
Chromium (Cr): 14.5 – 16.5%. Chromium gives the alloy resistance to oxidizing media such as nitric acid, ferric chloride and copper chloride, as well as high temperature oxidation.
Iron (Fe): 4.0 – 7.0%. Iron is present as a balancing element and contributes to the mechanical properties.
Tungsten (W): 3.0 – 4.5%. Tungsten further enhances the strength of the alloy and provides additional resistance to localized corrosion.
Cobalt (Co): 2.5% maximum. Cobalt is a minor added element that contributes to solid solution strengthening.
Carbon (C): 0.01% maximum (very low). The extremely low carbon content is a key feature of Hastelloy C276. It virtually eliminates grain boundary carbide precipitation in the weld heat affected zone. This means that the alloy can be used directly in the welded condition in most chemical processes without the need for post-weld solution annealing, which is a significant manufacturing advantage.

Hot working of Hastelloy C276 (N10276) :
(1) The hot working temperature range of Hastelloy C-276 is 1200℃~950℃, and the cooling method is water cooling or rapid air cooling.
(2) To ensure the best anti-corrosion performance, heat treatment should be carried out after hot working, and the workpiece should be directly added to the heated heat treatment furnace.
Cold working of Hastelloy C276 (N10276) :
(1) The work hardening rate of Hastelloy C276 pipe is greater than that of austenitic stainless steel, so the processing equipment needs to be selected. The workpiece should be in the solution heat treatment state, and there should be intermediate annealing during the cold rolling process.
(2) If the cold rolling deformation is greater than 15%, the workpiece needs to be subjected to secondary solution treatment.
Heat treatment of Hastelloy C276 (N10276) :
(1) The solution treatment temperature range of Hastelloy C276 is 1100℃~1160℃.
(2) The cooling method is water quenching. Materials with a thickness of less than 1.5mm can also use rapid air cooling. If air cooling is used, it should be cooled from 1000℃ to 600℃ within 2 minutes.
Corrosion Resistance
The corrosion resistance of Hastelloy C276 is due to its passivation film stability and elemental synergistic effect for the following harsh environments:
1. Strongly oxidizing media:
Resistant to boiling 10% sulfuric acid, 20% hydrochloric acid (with corrosion inhibitors).
Significant resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in solutions containing chloride ions (Cl-).
2. Reducing environments:
Excellent performance in reducing acids such as sulfuric and phosphoric acid, especially in mixed acids containing Fe³⁺ and Cu²⁺.
3. High temperature corrosion:
Resistant to dry chlorine corrosion below 400°C, superior to titanium alloy in wet chlorine corrosion resistance.
4. Weld sensitivity:
No need for heat treatment after welding to avoid intergranular corrosion, suitable for thick plate welded structures.
