What is NACE MR0175 and NACE MR0103？
NACE MR0175 and NACE MR0103 are both applied to working environment in sulfide stress and sour applications where require materials with resistance to them (i.e., applications involving the presence of H2S and liquid water). In 1975, NACE MR0175 was first released and has derived many versions as time going. In the 2003 newest revision, It was expanded once again finally including chloride stress corrosion cracking besides sulfide stress cracking. From then on many requirements changed, and some technical request, such as temperature restrictions, were added.
Even though the only “official” version of NACE MR0175 is NACE MR0175/ISO 15156, people are still using and specifying NACE MR0175-2002 (the last version—before the scope change). Therefore, when you ant to make the question clear, you really needs to be sure which version of MR0175 was referenced on the material certification. Even after clarification, the answer is complex and depends on the specific material involved
What is Difference Between NACE MR0175 and MR0103?
(1)MR0103 includes several standard from MR0175 to judge whether the environment is sour, which means the environment is different from those in oil and gas producing system. Based on these statement, users have to decide if the environment is SOUR and clarify whether the equipment meet the material requirement in MR0103 or not.
(2)MR0103 doesn’t consider the environmental disruption because it only covers SSC. The most commonly applied standard are limits about temperature chloride and PH levels. The materials listed show varying degrees of resistance to SSC. It does not attempt to rank the materials.
(3)MR0103 includes materials not listed in previous or current versions of MR0175. The opposite also applies.
(4)MR0103 has more details on welding restrictions in different kinds of material, especial carbon steel.
(5)NACE MR0175 is a global standard. It gives recommendations and states requirements for choosing and qualifying metallic alloys for use in oil and gas production equipment. They are also for plants that sweeten natural gas in environments that contain H2S. NACE MR0103 defines the requirements for resisting SSC. It is for use in refining sour petroleum and similar processing conditions, which contain H2S either in liquid form or as a gas. The hydrocarbon may or may not be present.
