<p>On 8<sup>th</sup> December 2025, we once again received message from one of our regular customers. The customer has ordered several batches of elbows during past years. This time the client required some replenishment of 90 and 180 deg elbows as the same specification of last order. Thus we double-checked client’s drawings and ASME B16.9 standard and took notes of what the client paid more attention to. One week later, we arranged manufacturing as per client’s request. Since the elbows are produced based on client’s drawings, we offered detailed inspection photos for them before shipment.</p>

<p>A Pipe Tee is a butt weld pipe fitting that connects three pipes together, typically featuring one main port and two branch ports arranged in a “T” shape.</p>



<p>The two common types are:</p>



<p>Equal Tee: All three ports have the same diameter.</p>



<p>Reducing Tee: The branch port diameter is smaller than the main port diameter.</p>

<p>Accurate calculation of tee weights is fundamental to professional piping engineering, primarily for the following reasons:</p>



<p>Cost Estimation: Steel is typically priced by weight. Precise weight calculations are essential for controlling procurement costs.</p>



<p>Transportation and Logistics: Determining total weight enables selection of appropriate shipping methods and calculation of freight costs.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-weight-calculation-formula-for-asme-b16-9-tee">Weight Calculation Formula for ASME B16.9 Tee </h2>



<p>The weight of a tee fitting can be approximated using the following formula:</p>



<p>if the branch size is reducing one size, it will be 0.94 times of equal tee weight.</p>



<p>if the branch size is reducing two size, it will be 0.91 times of straight tee weight.</p>



<p>if the branch size is reducing three size, it will be 0.89 times of equal tee weight.</p>



<p>Calculation formula: 0.02466 * (S + 1.5) * [D &#8211; (S + 1.5)] * (3C &#8211; D/2) / 1000. Where: S = wall thickness (mm), D = outer diameter (mm), and C = center-to-end dimension.</p>



<p>Example:</p>



<p>Calculating the Weight of a 6&#8243; Equal Tee (ASME B16.9)</p>



<p>Suppose we need to calculate the theoretical weight of a 6&#8243; Sch 40 equal tee.</p>



<p>According to the standard table (ASME B16.9):</p>



<p>Outer Diameter D = 168.3 mm</p>



<p>Wall Thickness S = 7.11 mm</p>



<p>Center-to-Face Dimension C = 143 mm</p>



<p>The formula is as follows:</p>



<p>Weight (kg) = 0.02466 × (S + 1.5) × [D − (S + 1.5)] × (3C − D/2) / 1000</p>



<p>Substituting values:</p>



<p>=0.02466×(7.11+1.5)×[168.3−(7.11+1.5)]×(3×143−168.3/2)/1000</p>



<p>=0.02466×8.61×159.69×348.85/1000</p>



<p>≈11.7 kg</p>

<p>Alloy 625 (Nickel Alloy 625) pipe fittings are used in high-temperature, high-pressure, and highly corrosive environments. These fittings are made from nickel-based Alloy 625, which offers exceptional corrosion resistance, high strength, and oxidation resistance across a wide range of temperatures.</p>



<p>The material can perform from cryogenic temperatures up to 1093 degrees Celsius temperatures. There are different types of the fittings such as the Alloy 625 Butt&nbsp;weld Elbow which is used to turn the direction of the line. The elbows come in different angles such as 45 degrees and 90 degrees. The high temperature operation of the material comes from its high melting point of 1350 degrees Celsius.</p>

<p>Yes, &#8220;Alloy 625&#8221; and &#8220;Inconel 625&#8221; refer to the same nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy, Inconel is a trademarked name for a family of nickel-based superalloys developed by Special Metals Corporation. Alloy 625 is one of the alloys within the Inconel family and is commonly referred to as Inconel 625.</p>

<p>SS316 is a stainless steel (mainly iron-based).</p>



<p>Alloy 625 is a nickel-based superalloy.</p>



<p><strong>Corrosion Resistance:</strong><strong></strong></p>



<p>SS316 has excellent resistance to corrosion, especially in chloride-rich environments, but Alloy 625 outperforms it in more aggressive, extreme conditions like high-temperature and high-pressure environments.</p>

<p>ASTM A234 is standard specification for wrought&nbsp;carbon steel&nbsp;&amp;&nbsp;alloy steel <a href="https://www.zcpipefittings.com/carbon-steel-butt-weld-90-degree-elbow.html">pipe fittings</a>&nbsp;which covers seamless and welded types.</p>



<p>The specification for the carbon steel 90 degree elbow, covers steel pipe fittings such as the carbon steel elbow A234 WPB which are primarily used in applications for the pressure piping systems. Generally these Elbow A234 Wpc fittings are designed to be used in moderate and high temperature applications . The A234 SR elbow is the standard of pipe fittings material, which indicates the materials properties of different kinds of carbon steel and alloy steel. One such steel grade in this standard is the WPB . In the term WPB, W means weldable, P stands for pressure, while B is grade b. B refers to the minimum yield strength, such as the ASTM A106/A53 Gr.B or API 5L Gr.B. A234 WPB, which is the most common material used in the manufacture of carbon steel pipe fittings.</p>

<p>There are two main types of 90 degree elbows long radius (LR) and short radius (SR) elbows. Long-radius elbows have a longer center line radius than the pipe diameter, making them less abrupt in the change of direction. They are mainly used in low-pressure and low-velocity systems.</p>

<p>A <a href="https://www.zzsteels.com/products/concentric-reducer/">concentric reducer</a> is used to join pipe sections or tube sections on the same axis. The concentric reducer is cone-shaped, and is used when there is a shift in diameter between pipes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Inpection of 8&#8243; X 4&#8243; Concentric Pipe Reducer</h2>



<p>The concentric pipe reducer is produced according to ASME B16.9 Standard, it covers overall dimensions, tolerances, ratings, testing, and markings for factory-made wrought <a href="https://www.zzfittings.com/products/butt-weld-fittings/">buttwelding fittings</a> in sizes NPS 1 ∕ 2 through NPS 48 (DN 15 through DN 1200). It covers fittings of any producible wall thickness.</p>



<p>Concentric Reducer 8&#8243; x 4&#8243; / Thk 0.325&#8243; X 0.375&#8243; Height 6&#8243; in millimetre size is OD219.1 x 114.3 / T 8.25 x 9.5mm &#8211; H152.4mm. The tolerance is stated in ASME B16.9 as following<br>OD 219.1 +2.4mm / -1.6mm<br>OD 114.3 +1.6mm<br>T 8.25 x 9.5mm ( ± 12.5%)<br>H 152.4 + 2mm</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How to Pack Carbon Steel Concentric Reducer</h2>

After the primer is dried, wrapping the plstick film on the body of reducing fittings. Finally line them into wooden case accordingly.</p>
