ASME B16.9 butt weld tees are pipe fittings primarily used to connect pipe sections and pipelines. They typically serve to connect and link three pipes, hence the name “tee.” Tee fittings are primarily used in metal piping systems to connect pipes. Based on the size of the pipe connections, tees on the market can be broadly categorized into two types: equal-size tees and reducer tees. Equal-size tees have all pipe connection ends of the same dimension, while reducer tees feature branch pipe sizes smaller than the main pipe size. Common materials for tees available in the market include carbon steel, alloy steel, and stainless steel.

ANSI B16.9 Steel Pipe Fitting Tee Specification

The ASME B16.9 standard covers multiple critical elements in the manufacturing of butt-weld pipe fittings. Regarding dimensional tolerances, it explicitly specifies permissible deviations for various dimensions of butt-weld pipe fittings, including outer diameter, inner diameter, wall thickness, length, and angle. This ensures the fittings can be used in conjunction with other components within piping systems, guaranteeing the integrity and stability of connections.

Equal Tee

Equal tee: All three ports have the same nominal diameter, meaning the main pipe and branch pipes have the same diameter. It is suitable for situations where the flow rates of the main pipe and branch pipes are the same, ensuring relatively balanced fluid velocity across all pipes. It is commonly used in piping systems requiring symmetrical branching, such as certain symmetrically arranged equipment connection pipes.

Reducing Tee

Reducing tee: The nominal diameters of the three ports are different, typically with the main pipe having a larger diameter than the branch pipes. This type of tee is suitable for pipeline systems where both branching and merging occur, while also requiring changes in pipe diameter. It allows flexible adjustment of pipe diameter based on different flow requirements.

Straight Tee & Cross

Straight Tee

ASME B16.9 Straight Tee is a common pipe fitting used in piping systems to achieve a 90-degree branch or convergence. All three ports share the same size, primarily serving to branch off a secondary line of identical dimensions from a main pipe. This design offers simplicity and low fluid resistance, making it widely used in scenarios requiring straightforward branching or parallel flow, such as water supply systems and HVAC systems.

Straight Cross

Unlike a tee, the ASME B16.9 Cross features four ports to enable two 90 degree divergences or convergences within a piping system. With ports radiating in four directions from a central junction point, crosses can handle fluid flow from multiple pipelines simultaneously. Due to their complex fluid pathways, crosses typically occupy more space than tees and may introduce higher fluid resistance or pressure loss. Consequently, crosses are primarily used in space-constrained applications or specialized scenarios requiring simultaneous branching to two directions from a single point.

ASME B16.9 Standard

This Standard covers overall dimensions, tolerances, ratings, testing, and markings for factory-made wrought buttwelding fittings in sizes NPS 1/2 through NPS 48 (DN 15 through DN 1200).

Standard Fittings.

That the fitting was manufactured in conformance with this Standard, including all dimensional requirements, is certified by a prefix”WP” in the material grade designation marking.

That the fitting was manufactured in conformance with this Standard, except that dimensional requirements are as agreed between the purchaser and the manufacturer, is certified by a supple mentary suffix to the material grade designation marking as follows:

(a) “S58” of ASTM A960 applies for fittings in accordance with ASTM A234, A403, and A420.

(b) “S8” applies for fittings in accordance with ASTM A815.

(c) “SPLD” applies for fittings in accordance with ASTM B361, B363, and B366.

ASME B16.9 Butt Weld Tee, renowned for their exceptional performance and reliable quality, find extensive application across multiple critical industries:

Petrochemical Industry

Power and Energy Industry

Metallurgical Industry

Shipbuilding Industry

Urban Infrastructure Development

One Seam or Two on a Butt Weld Tee?

Inspect the branch barrel.

If the weld line stops exactly at the run-to-branch crotch and you can trace it continuously around 360°, you are looking at a single-seam tee (hot-extruded or hydro-formed).

If the line reappears on the opposite side of the branch, you have found the second longitudinal seam—proof that the outlet was made from two pressed half-shells welded together. This dual-seam design is common on oversized tees ≥24″ or heavy-wall Schedules where single-extrusion tooling is too costly.

Calculation

Generally, steel plates commonly available on the market have widths of 2 meters or less. When rolled into a cylinder, the circumference formula is:

d = 2πr

where r is the width of the steel plate. Calculating yields:

20000 / 3.14 ≈ 636.9 mm Therefore:

When the circumference is < 636.9 mm, the tee is typically seamless or requires only one weld seam;

When the circumference is > 636.9 mm, a structure with two weld seams is required.

In actual production:

Tees below 24″ are generally manufactured seamless, offering superior overall strength and sealing performance;

For tees above 24″, welding is recommended. The double-welded production method offers shorter lead times, whereas single-welded products often require custom steel plates, resulting in longer production cycles.

This process selection not only depends on steel plate specifications but also directly impacts delivery schedules and costs. Therefore, it must be confirmed during the design and procurement stages.

Based on the product’s material requirements, high-quality steel conforming to ASME B16.9 standards is selected as raw material. Raw materials undergo stringent inspection, including chemical composition analysis and mechanical property testing, to ensure compliance with standard specifications. Only qualified raw materials proceed to subsequent production stages, guaranteeing product quality from the source.

Forming Process

A pipe section matching the main pipe diameter is inserted into a hydraulic forming die. Ultra-high-pressure fluid is injected into the pipe blank while axial thrust is applied at both ends to compensate for material displacement. Under the combined action of fluid pressure and axial thrust, the metal flows toward the mold cavity (in the branch pipe direction), ultimately forming the tee blank. The tee blank undergoes preliminary cleaning to remove surface scale and impurities.

Heat Treatment

To eliminate internal stresses generated during forging and enhance the mechanical properties of the tee, the forged blank undergoes heat treatment. The heat treatment process varies by material composition but typically comprises three stages: heating, holding, and cooling. Precise control of heating temperature, holding time, and cooling rate is essential during heat treatment to ensure the tee achieves the required mechanical properties, such as hardness, strength, and toughness.

Machining

The heat-treated tee blank undergoes machining to achieve the dimensional and precision requirements specified by standards. Machining primarily involves processes like turning, milling, and drilling to form the tee’s various openings, end faces, and internal/external surfaces. This ensures the tee’s dimensional tolerances and surface roughness comply with ASME B16.9 standards.

Inspection and Testing

Throughout the production of ASME B16.9 butt-welded tees, inspection and testing are conducted at every stage. Beyond raw material inspection, intermediate inspection during forging, post-heat-treatment property testing, and dimensional inspection after machining, finished products undergo final inspection and testing. This includes visual inspection, dimensional verification, pressure testing, and non-destructive testing.

In pipeline system construction and maintenance, ASME B16.9 elbow serve as critical fittings for altering fluid flow direction. Their quality and specification compliance directly impact the safety and stability of the entire system. The ASME B16.9 standard, recognized globally as the authoritative specification for pipe fitting manufacturing, provides unified standards for elbow production, design, and application. If you are seeking reliable ASME B16.9 elbows, understanding their standards and types is essential.

ASME B16.9 elbows are among the most common butt-welded fittings in industrial piping systems, primarily used to redirect pipeline flow. Based on varying operational requirements, elbows are categorized into Long Radius Elbows and Short Radius Elbows. They are manufactured according to the ASME B16.9 standard to ensure dimensional accuracy and safety performance.

ASME B16.9 Elbow Fitting Specifications

The ASME B16.9 standard provides detailed specifications for elbow fitting dimensions and specifications, including:

Nominal Pipe Size (NPS): Ranges from 1/2 inch to 48 inches.

Wall Thickness (Schedule): Multiple wall thicknesses are available based on pipeline pressure ratings, such as Sch. 10s, Sch. 40, Sch. 80, Sch. 160, etc.

Center-to-End Distance: This is the critical dimension for determining installation space.

Bevel: Typically 37.5 degrees to facilitate butt welding connections.

Long Radius Elbows

Long-radius elbows are a common type of elbow in piping systems. Their bend radius (the distance from the elbow center to the pipe centerline) equals 1.5 times the nominal pipe size. For example, a 4-inch long-radius elbow has a bend radius of 6 inches. The long-radius design minimizes pressure loss and turbulence at the bend, making it widely used in applications demanding high fluid flow quality, such as oil pipelines, gas pipelines, and chemical process lines.

The radius of curvature (R) is 1.5 times the nominal pipe size (NPS) or outside diameter (D). (R = 1.5D). This provides a smoother turn, reducing friction, turbulence, and pressure drop. It’s generally preferred when space allows and flow efficiency is critical.

For example,NPS 2 Elbow, the calculation of the distance from the center to the end as follows:

90°- 2″- LR : = 1.1/2 x (25,4 x 2) A = 76,2 mm

180°- 2″- LR : = 1.1/2 x (25,4 x 2) x 2 A = 152,4 mm

90°- 2″- SR : = 25,4 x 2 A = 50,8 mm

180°- 2″- SR : = (25,4 x 2) x 2 A = 101,6 mm

Short Radius Elbows

The bending radius of a short-radius elbow equals the nominal size of the pipe. For example, a 4-inch short-radius elbow has a bending radius of 4 inches. Due to its smaller bending radius, short-radius elbows are better suited for use in areas with limited space. However, this design may result in greater pressure loss and turbulence, requiring careful consideration of trade-offs when selecting them.

The radius of curvature (R) is equal to the nominal pipe size (NPS) or outside diameter (D). (R = 1.0D). This results in a sharper turn, increasing turbulence and pressure drop, but it is more compact and suitable for tight spaces where a smaller bend is necessary.

45 Degree Elbow

Turn angle: Achieves a 45° directional deflection, suitable for long-distance pipelines requiring minor directional adjustments or when the angle between two pipeline sections is 45°. Primarily used for minor changes in pipeline direction or scenarios requiring mitigation of fluid impact force.

90 Degree Elbow

Achieves a 90° right-angle turn, the most commonly used type, suitable for “vertical/horizontal direction switching” scenarios (e.g., pipelines transitioning from the ground to walls, or right-angle connections between equipment inlets/outlets).

ANSI/ASME B16.9 90 degree elbow is one type of steel pipe fittings which used to change direction of the pipeline. It can be divided into long radius (LR) and short radius (SR). We provide carbon steel, stainless steel and aluminum elbow in both seamless and welded for the overseas projects.

Material & Grades of ASME B16.9 Buttweld Fittings

Stainless Steel Elbow

The material selection for ASME B16.9 stainless steel elbows typically depends on the operating environment and the conveyed medium. Common options include:

304 Stainless Steel: The most widely used stainless steel grade, offering excellent corrosion resistance and machinability, suitable for general corrosive environments.

316 Stainless Steel: Enhanced with molybdenum, providing superior resistance to chloride ion corrosion. Ideal for marine environments, chemical processing, pharmaceuticals, and other applications demanding higher corrosion resistance. 316L is a low-carbon variant of 316 with superior weldability.

Other stainless steel grades: For specialized requirements, options like 201, 202, 321, 904L, and duplex stainless steels (e.g., 2205, 2507) can be selected to meet diverse demands for temperature resistance, pressure tolerance, and corrosion resistance.

Pickling and Passivation

Surface scale, rust, and impurities are removed through acid pickling, followed by passivation to form a dense oxide film, enhancing corrosion resistance.

Sandblasting

High-velocity sand particles remove surface scale and weld slag, creating a uniform, clean surface that provides an excellent foundation for subsequent coating or polishing.

Polishing

Stainless steel elbows can be polished mechanically or electrolytically to enhance surface quality. Polishing yields a smooth, lustrous finish suitable for applications demanding high aesthetics, such as food processing, pharmaceuticals, and clean pipeline systems.

Carbon Steel Pipe Elbows

ASME B16.9 Carbon steel elbows are commonly used pipe fittings in piping systems. Manufactured from high-quality carbon steel, they offer excellent strength, toughness, and high-pressure resistance, capable of withstanding impacts and temperature fluctuations under complex operating conditions. Compared to stainless steel or alloy steel, carbon steel provides a more economical and practical solution, making it widely adopted in industries such as petroleum and natural gas, chemical processing, power generation, and water treatment.

Chemical Composition

CHEMICAL

LIMITS

C

Mn

P

S

Si

Cr

Mo

Ni

Cu

Cb

V

ASTM A234 WPB

MIN

0.29

0.10

MAX

0.30

1.06

0.050

0.058

0.40

0.15

0.40

0.40

/

0.08

Surface Treatment

Surface protection is critical in the production and application of carbon steel butt weld elbows. Since carbon steel is prone to oxidation and rusting, sandblasting and painting are commonly employed to enhance the elbows’ corrosion resistance and service life.

Sandblasting

High-velocity abrasive blasting removes surface scale, rust, and contaminants.

This process creates a cleaner, rougher surface that improves coating adhesion.

This improves overall corrosion resistance and extends coating longevity.

Painting

Painting is applied after sandblasting, commonly using black paint, epoxy paint, etc. The purpose of painting after sandblasting is to enhance surface adhesion.

It forms a protective film on the elbow surface, isolating it from air and moisture to prevent oxidation. This provides corrosion protection during transportation.

The paint layer also serves aesthetic and identification purposes, facilitating engineering installation.

ANSI / ASME B16.9 Pipe Fitting

ANSI/ASME B16.9 Fittings (commonly referred to as “B16.9 Fittings”) denote butt-welded pipe fittings conforming to the ASME B16.9 standard. Beyond elbows, they encompass tees, reducers, pipe caps, and other components, though elbows represent the most widely used type. “Butt weld” is the core connection method for these fittings. Both ends of the fitting are designed with the same wall thickness as the pipeline. Through welding, they fuse completely with the pipeline to form a continuous sealed structure. This offers the advantages of high strength and high sealing integrity, enabling them to withstand harsh operating conditions such as high pressure, high temperature, and vibration.

For ASME B16.9 elbow, they not only meet the dimensional and quality requirements of the B16.9 standard but also ensure the overall sealing integrity of the piping system through buttweld connections, effectively preventing medium leakage. This makes them indispensable in fields with extremely high demands for sealing and safety, such as petrochemicals, nuclear power, and aerospace. Furthermore, butt-welded connections offer greater strength than threaded or socket welded joints, reducing stress concentration at pipe-fitting interfaces and extending the service life of piping systems.

Elbow and Pipe Bend

In piping systems, both ASME B16.9 elbow and pipe bends are used to alter the flow direction of fluids, but they differ significantly in design and application:

Manufacturing Method:

Elbows are typically manufactured according to ASME B16.9 or other standards as standardized pipe fittings, generally available in fixed angles such as 45°, 90°, and 180°. Pipe bends, however, are often field-fabricated or custom-made to drawings, allowing for any angle (e.g., 60°, 75°).

Bend Radius:

Elbows come in short radius (1D) and long radius (1.5D) types, while pipe bends typically feature larger radii—up to 3D, 5D, 10D, or greater—resulting in lower fluid resistance.

Applications:

Elbows are preferred in space-constrained or standardized piping systems for ease of installation. Pipe bends are favored for long-distance pipelines or scenarios requiring reduced flow resistance, such as oil and gas transmission lines.

Cost and Flexibility:

Elbow production is standardized, resulting in lower costs. Pipe bends offer flexible fabrication to meet non-standard requirements but incur relatively higher manufacturing expenses.

ASME B16.9 Standard

This Standard covers overall dimensions, tolerances, ratings, testing, and markings for factory-made wrought buttwelding fittings in sizes NPS 1/2 through NPS 48 (DN 15 through DN 1200).

Pressure Rating Designation

Class followed by a dimensionless number is the designation for pressure-temperature ratings. Standardized designations for flanges per ASME B16.5 referenced in this Standard are Classes 150, 300, 600, 900, 1500, and 2500.

Marking

Standard Marking Each fitting shall be permanently marked to show the following:

(a) manufacturer’s name or trademark

(b) material identification, either the ASTM or ASME grade designation

(c) schedule number1 or nominal wall thickness in mm

(d) size — the nominal pipe size (NPS) identification number related to the end connections shall be used

(e) compliance—see para. 4.4 for standard and special fitting marking

A manufacturer may supplement these mandatory markings with others, including a DN size designation, but confusion with the required marking shall be avoided.

Tolerances

The listings with decimals do not imply precision measurement, such as use of vernier, micrometer, electronic readout equipment, etc.

Packaging

The beveled edges at both ends of the elbow (where pipes connect) are the most vulnerable and prone to deformation from impact. Therefore, the first step in packaging is to fit plastic protective caps over these beveled edges. This effectively prevents damage or scratches during handling and transportation, making it crucial.

Smaller elbows are typically individually wrapped in plastic bags or bubble wrap. This method offers protection against moisture, dust, and prevents scratches caused by friction between elbows. Smaller elbows are first placed in cardboard boxes before being loaded into wooden crates.

Large-sized elbows are neatly stacked in sturdy wooden crates or pallets. These crates and pallets are typically fumigated to meet international shipping standards.

Finally, each crate or bundle of elbows is labeled with a detailed tag containing all product information.

What is Alloy Steel?

Alloy steel refers to carbon steel that has been intentionally enriched with one or more alloying elements (such as chromium, nickel, molybdenum, vanadium, tungsten, manganese, silicon, boron, titanium, copper, etc.) to enhance or achieve specific properties. Different alloying elements impart distinct characteristics to alloy steels. For instance, chromium enhances corrosion resistance and oxidation resistance, nickel improves strength and toughness, and molybdenum increases heat resistance and wear resistance. The addition levels of these alloying elements typically exceed the impurity content in carbon steel. Their types and proportions significantly influence the steel’s mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, heat resistance, wear resistance, and other key attributes. Alloy steels are classified by alloy element content into:

– Low-alloy steel (less than 5% alloy elements)

– Medium-alloy steel (5%-10% alloy elements)

– High-alloy steel (greater than 10% alloy elements)

Generally, higher alloy content yields superior steel properties but also commands a higher price.

Advantages of Alloy Steel:

High Strength and High Toughness: Capable of withstanding immense stress without fracturing.

Exceptional Wear Resistance: Widely used in components requiring high wear resistance, such as gears, bearings, and cutting tools.

Superior Corrosion and Heat Resistance: Suitable for corrosive or high-temperature environments in industries like chemical processing and power generation.

Formability and Machinability: Certain alloy steels exhibit enhanced formability and weldability during processing.

Alloy Steel Products & Applications

1. Alloy Steel Plates

Alloy steel plates are thicker than metal sheets, forming flat rectangular steel plates. They are commonly used in pressure vessels, boilers, chemical equipment, and large machinery manufacturing. Featuring high strength, excellent heat resistance, and corrosion resistance, common standards include ASTM A387 and EN 10028.

2. Alloy Steel Pipes & Tubes

Alloy steel pipes and tubes are categorized into seamless and welded types, extensively used in oil and gas, power plants, chemical pipelines, and heat exchangers. Typical grades like ASTM A335 P11, P22, P91 exhibit high-temperature and pressure resistance.

3. Alloy Steel Sheets

Alloy steel sheets feature reduced thickness and are primarily used in automotive manufacturing, home appliances, precision machinery, and architectural decoration. Produced via cold-rolling or hot-rolling processes, these sheets offer superior surface quality and ease of further processing.

4. Alloy Steel Bars & Rods

Alloy steel bars and rods come in various shapes, sizes, and grades. They are predominantly used in mechanical components, bearings, gears, and tool manufacturing. Common supply forms include round bars, square bars, and hexagonal bars, offering high strength, wear resistance, and excellent machinability.

5. Alloy Steel Wires

Alloy steel wires are primarily used in springs, steel cables, fasteners, and welding wires. They feature high toughness, high strength, and good tensile properties.

6. Alloy Steel Castings

Alloy steel castings are produced by pouring molten steel into molds, commonly used for manufacturing engine blocks, gears, and other high-stress components. Castings made through this process are widely applied in pumps, valves, turbines, and marine parts, capable of withstanding heavy loads and complex operating conditions. Their advantage lies in achieving complex shapes in a single casting operation.

7. Alloy Steel Forgings

Forgings are produced by shaping heated steel into desired forms using forging presses. Alloy steel forgings feature high strength and density, commonly used in high-pressure vessels, pressure pipelines, mechanical shafts, flanges, and similar applications. The forging process enhances material fatigue resistance and structural reliability.

Butt Weld Pipe Fitting Types

Butt Weld Elbows:

One of the most commonly used fittings in piping systems, they are primarily used to change the direction of flow. They are permanently connected to pipes or other fittings via butt welding, creating a seamless, strong, and leak-proof structure.

90-degree elbows: Used to achieve a 90-degree change in direction and are available in long radius (LR) and short radius (SR) versions.

45-degree elbows: Used to achieve a 45-degree change in direction.

180-degree elbows (return elbows): Used to completely reverse flow direction and are commonly found in heat exchangers.

Butt Weld Tees:

Butt Weld Tees are a common pipe connector. They are T-shaped and used to branch off from a main pipeline, diverting or merging fluids. They are connected to the pipeline via butt welding, creating a secure, sealed, and continuous structure that ensures leak-free operation even when conveying high-pressure, high-temperature, or corrosive media. Tees are available in equal-diameter and reducing-diameter tees.

Butt Weld Crosses:

Butt-Weld Crosses are a specialized butt-weld pipe fitting. Shaped like a cross, it’s primarily used to connect four pipes at a point, diverting or merging fluids in four directions.

Butt weld Reducer:

Butt-weld reducers, also commonly known as butt-weld reducers, are an important butt-weld pipe fitting used to connect two pipes of different diameters, ensuring a smooth transition and regulating flow within a piping system. They are welded directly to the pipe using a beveled end, creating a secure, leak-proof connection. They also sit flush with the pipe’s interior wall, minimizing fluid resistance. Reducers are categorized as concentric and eccentric reducers.

Butt weld Cap:

Butt weld caps are essential pipe connectors used to seal the ends of piping systems. They lack internal threads or sockets, but are instead welded directly to the pipe using a beveled groove, creating a permanent, seamless, and highly sealed end.

Benefits of ANSI B16.9 Compliance

Enhanced Safety: Components manufactured to precise dimensions and strict tolerances reduce the likelihood of leaks or failures.

Standardization: Consistent part dimensions eliminate guesswork, simplifying installation and maintenance.

Regulatory Acceptance: Components that comply with recognized rules clear the approval path in regulated environments.

Cost-Effectiveness: Reliably manufactured parts reduce scrap, minimize failures, and lower maintenance costs.

Global compatibility: International specifications allow components to fit systems built anywhere, simplifying logistics.

Manufacturing Process

Material selection:

Choosing the appropriate raw materials is the first step. Commonly used materials include carbon steel, stainless steel, etc. The raw materials are cut into the required length and shape.

Hot pushing:

For elbow-type ASTM A234 butt-welded pipe fittings, hot pushing is a common forming method. The blank is heated to a certain temperature and then placed into a die for pushing.

Stamping:

The blank is placed in a die, and a press is used to apply significant pressure, causing the blank to deform into the desired pipe fitting shape.

Cold pressing:

Cold pressing is a processing method that applies pressure to the material at room temperature, causing it to undergo plastic deformation to achieve the desired shape and dimensions.

Hot pressing

Hot pressing is a processing method that involves heating the material to a certain temperature and then applying pressure. Heating increases the atomic mobility of the material, reducing its yield strength and making it easier to undergo plastic deformation.

Heat treatment :

After forming, the pipe fittings undergo heat treatment processes (such as normalizing, annealing, or quenching + tempering) to eliminate stress and improve mechanical properties and corrosion resistance.

Blank shaping:

Blank shaping is a critical step in the mechanical manufacturing process, aimed at correcting and optimizing the shape and dimensions of the blank obtained from preliminary processing.

Beveling:

Before butt welding, the welding area of the pipe fitting must undergo beveling. There are various beveling forms, such as V-type beveling and U-type beveling, selected based on the wall thickness of the pipe fitting and welding requirements.

Circularity correction:

Circularity correction is an operation that corrects the shape of circular workpieces or blanks to make them as close as possible to an ideal circle.

Surface Treatment:

Methods such as sandblasting, acid washing, or passivation are used to remove scale, rust, and impurities, thereby improving the surface quality of the pipe fittings. Sandblasting effectively removes rust, scale, oil stains, and other impurities from the metal surface. Painting pipe fittings is a surface protection process. After applying anti-rust paint, it can effectively resist atmospheric corrosion and prevent rusting of the pipe fittings.

Marking:

Marking on pipe fittings refers to the process of engraving text, numbers, or symbols on the surface of the fittings.

Inspection:

Quality inspection is an indispensable part of the stainless steel butt-welded pipe fitting manufacturing process. This step typically includes dimensional inspection, visual inspection, weld inspection, and other aspects to ensure product quality and reliability.

Packaging:

During transportation and storage, pipe fittings may be subjected to external forces such as collisions, friction, and compression. Proper packaging can minimize damage caused by these external forces. For stainless steel butt-welded pipe fittings, protective caps are added to both ends to prevent damage during transportation and storage. The choice of packaging materials depends on the surface requirements of the product, with common options including plastic bags, foam, bubble wrap, and woven bags.

Advantages of the Butt Weld Pipe Fitting

High strength and excellent pressure resistance: The integral forming process ensures that the pipe fittings are consistent with the base material, resulting in high connection strength after welding.

Reliable sealing performance: Welded connections eliminate the risk of leaks, making them suitable for high-temperature and high-pressure pipeline systems.

Wide range of applications: Suitable for various industrial fields such as petroleum, chemicals, power, shipping, and metallurgy.

Complete range of specifications: We can produce a variety of butt-welded pipe fittings from small to large diameters to meet different engineering requirements.

Conclusion

The manufacturing process for butt-welded pipe fittings is a complex and precise procedure involving multiple stages, including raw material preparation, welding and forming, pipe processing, welding edge finishing, quality inspection, and packaging and storage. Through these series of manufacturing steps, the high quality and reliability of stainless steel butt-welded pipe fittings are ensured, enabling their widespread application across various industrial sectors. With the continuous advancement of technology, the manufacturing processes for butt-welded pipe fittings are also undergoing constant innovation and improvement to meet the market’s demand for high-quality products.

Outer diameter: At the welded bevel end of the elbow, the outer diameter should be measured using a vernier caliper or tape measure to ensure it matches the outer diameter of the connecting pipe.

Wall thickness: Wall thickness is a critical parameter affecting the pressure-bearing capacity of the elbow. Wall thickness should be measured at the beveled end and the body of the elbow, and compared with the nominal wall thickness of the pipe (e.g., SCH 40, SCH 80). According to standards, the negative deviation of the elbow’s wall thickness is typically restricted to ensure minimum pressure-bearing capacity. Wall thickness can be inspected using a wall thickness measuring caliper or an ultrasonic thickness gauge.

Hot Forming: ASTM A234 WPB elbows made of carbon steel and other materials are typically formed using hot forming and hot pressing processes. For example, WPB fittings formed at temperatures ranging from 620°C (1150°F) to 980°C (1800°F) can be cooled in still air without requiring additional heat treatment.

Processing Methods: These include bending, extrusion, and stamping to form elbows with different angles and radii. Additionally, the elbows undergo acid washing, polishing, and sandblasting processes to enhance surface quality and corrosion resistance.

On May 20, 2025, our company received an inquiry from a new customer for carbon steel pipes and fittings. The customer listed the specifications, materials, quantity and related technical requirements of the flanges in detail in the email. After completing the quotation, the customer communicated with us about the specific details and placed an order with us.

ZIZI is a company specializing in the production and processing of pipes and fittings. The pipes and pipe fittings we produce are mainly used in chemical, petroleum, natural gas, water conservancy, electric power, marine engineering and other fields. The products mainly include seamless pipes, welded pipes, butt-welded pipe fittings, high-pressure forged pipe fittings and flanges of various sizes. The materials include carbon steel, stainless steel, alloy steel, low-temperature steel, duplex steel, base alloy, etc.

Inspection of Carbon Steel pipes

Outer diameter inspection:

Usually, an outside diameter micrometer or caliper is used to measure the steel pipe in different cross-sections and circumferential directions to check whether it is within the allowable tolerance range. For large-diameter steel pipes, ovality may also be checked.

Wall Thickness (WT) Inspection:

Measurement is carried out at different points of the steel pipe to ensure that the wall thickness is uniform and meets the minimum wall thickness requirements specified in the standard. The standard usually specifies the negative deviation of wall thickness (that is, the minimum allowable wall thickness) and the unevenness of wall thickness

Length (Length) Inspection:

According to the order requirements, verify whether the fixed length, multiple length or irregular length of the steel pipe meets the requirements.

Inspection of Butt Weld pipe fittings

Nominal diameter (DN) inspection

This is the key dimension for the connection between the pipe fittings and the pipeline. And it is necessary to check whether it is consistent with the order and design drawings. Center distance and height (applicable to elbows, tees, reducers, etc.):

Elbows: Check the center distance of the elbow, the bending radius and the angle (such as 45°, 90°, 180°).

Tee: Check the center distance between the main pipe and the branch pipe, as well as the size and angle of the branch pipe.

Reducers: Check the diameter and wall thickness of the large and small ends, as well as the length and taper of the reducing part.

On 10th, January, we received one inquiry from one of our regular customers. Last year this client customized a batch of 180 deg elbow in ASTM A234 WPB material. This time he need a new batch of elbows in different sizes, including 180 deg elbow and 90 deg elbow.

Inspecting the drawings provided, our engineering showed their feasibility. After discussing the detailed data of the elbows, the client placed the order in February.

Since there’re 540 pcs in total for 2 items, we made one sample for client’s confirmation at first. After client’s evaluation and confirmation, we produced the elbow in quantity.

After reviewing all the goods photos, the client agreed to arrange delivery.

ASTM A234 WPB Elbow is a type of pipe fitting commonly used to change the direction of fluid flow in a piping system. It is made from carbon steel that conforms to the ASTM A234 standard, which specifies the requirements for pipe fittings made from wrought carbon steel and alloy steel.

ASTM A234 WPB Explanation

ASTM A234: This is a standard specification set by ASTM International (formerly known as the American Society for Testing and Materials) for wrought carbon steel and alloy steel fittings. It includes various fittings like elbows, tees, reducers, and caps used in pressure systems and piping.

WPB: This refers to a specific grade of carbon steel material under ASTM A234. WPB stands for Weldable (W), Pipe (P), and Grade B (B). This means the material is suitable for welding and can handle moderate pressure and temperature conditions. WPB fittings are typically used in carbon steel piping systems where medium pressure is involved.

Manufacturing Process

Forging: The elbow is forged into shape to meet the desired specifications.

Heat Treatment: Elbows are heat-treated to improve mechanical properties, especially strength and durability.

Welding: Elbows are often welded to other pipes to form a continuous pipeline. Welding procedures are crucial to ensure the joint’s strength and prevent leaks.

Non-Destructive Testing: Elbows are tested for defects using methods like X-rays or ultrasonic testing to ensure no internal or external flaws.

Key Characteristics of ASTM A234 WPB Elbow

Material: WPB fittings are made of carbon steel, commonly using materials like A106 Grade B or A53 Grade B steel, offering good strength, weldability, and pressure tolerance.

Temperature Range: ASTM A234 WPB fittings are suitable for use in systems operating within the temperature range of -29°C to 425°C (-20°F to 800°F).

Strength: The tensile strength of WPB fittings is typically around 485 MPa (70 ksi) minimum, ensuring they can withstand standard operating pressures.

Corrosion Resistance: While WPB elbows offer good resistance in non-extreme environments, they are generally not suitable for highly corrosive or acidic environments. They are commonly used in systems carrying water, oil, and natural gas.

Applications: Commonly used in pipelines for oil and gas, chemical plants, power generation, and HVAC systems.

Common Applications

Oil and Gas Industry: For the transportation of oil, natural gas, and water pipelines.

Chemical and Petrochemical Plants: Used in fluid and gas transport systems, especially in medium-pressure applications.

Power Plants: For steam, water, and gas transport systems.

HVAC Systems: Used for systems requiring a change in fluid flow direction.

Common Sizes and Angles

Angles: The most common elbow angles are 45°, 90°, and 180°. These are used to change the direction of the pipeline in various ways.

Pipe Sizes: ASTM A234 WPB elbows come in a wide range of sizes, from small-diameter pipes to large-diameter pipes, depending on the project’s requirements.

Specification of ASTM A182 Threaded Fittings

Stainless Steel Threaded Fittings are commonly used in piping systems where secure connections are needed but welding is not an option or practical. These fittings have internal or external threads that allow them to be screwed into the corresponding threaded pipes or other fittings. They’re known for their durability, corrosion resistance, and ease of installation.

Threaded Fittings resist corrosion from caustic chemicals, corrosive fluids, oils, and gases, and withstand pressure and high temperatures in plumbing applications and food and dairy processing.

Threaded fittings come in various shapes and sizes to accommodate different pipe systems and needs. Common types include:

Elbows (90°, 45°): Used to change the direction of the pipe.

Tees: Used to create branch connections (T-shaped).

Couplings: Used to connect two pipes in a straight line.

Reducers: Used to reduce the size of a pipe (e.g., from a larger to a smaller diameter).

Caps: Used to seal the end of a pipe.

Unions: Used for easy disassembly of the pipe connection, allowing for maintenance or replacement.

Bushings: Used to connect pipes of different sizes.

Nipple: A short piece of pipe with threads on both ends, used for joining two fittings.
