Cold drawn seamless tubes, also known as cold-drawn precision seamless steel tubes, are a type of high-precision steel tube. Compared to commonly used hot-rolled seamless tubes, they differ significantly in both manufacturing processes and final product characteristics.

What is Cold Drawn Seamless Tube?

Cold-drawn seamless tubing is produced using seamless steel tube blanks or finished products as raw materials. At room temperature, the material is drawn through the dies of a cold drawing machine to form the desired shape without heating. The final product features smaller dimensions, thinner walls, and increased length. The core processes include cutting, piercing, rolling, acid washing, and cold drawing. Some products may also require annealing to eliminate internal stresses. Using precision seamless tubes for the manufacture of mechanical structures or hydraulic equipment can significantly reduce machining time, improve material utilization, and enhance product quality.

Advantages of Cold Drawn Seamless Tubes

High Precision: The cold drawing process strictly controls the dimensional tolerances of the tube, including outer diameter and wall thickness.

Surface Quality: After cold drawing, the tube’s inner and outer surfaces are smooth, free of oxide layers, and exhibit excellent surface quality.

Mechanical Properties: The cold drawing process plastically deforms the steel, thereby increasing its hardness, tensile strength, and other mechanical properties.

Diverse dimensions: It enables the production of small-diameter, thin-walled tubes that are difficult to manufacture using hot-rolled processes.

Manufacturing Process

Tube blank preparation: Select suitable steel materials, such as low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, or alloy steel, as raw materials. Heat the steel blank to 1100°C–1300°C to facilitate subsequent piercing and drawing processes.

Piercing: The heated steel billet is fed into the piercing machine, where it is drawn through the machine’s internal drawing equipment to form a hollow tube shape. The pierced billet is then water-cooled.

Cold drawing: The hollow steel tube after piercing is sent into the cold drawing machine, where it is drawn through a die at room temperature or near room temperature to achieve the desired dimensions and shape. Common cold drawing methods include single-pass cold drawing and multi-pass cold drawing.

Heat treatment: To enhance the mechanical properties of the steel tube, such as hardness, strength, and toughness, heat treatment processes such as annealing, normalizing, quenching, and tempering are typically performed.

Acid washing: After heat treatment, the surface of the steel tube typically forms scale and other impurities. These are removed by immersing the steel tube in an acid solution to remove the oxide layer and impurities from the surface.

Anti-Rust Oiling: The steel pipe surface is coated with anti-rust oil to prevent rust.

Inspection and Testing: The steel pipe undergoes mechanical property tests such as tensile testing, hardness testing, and bending testing. The outer diameter, inner diameter, and wall thickness are measured, and surface and internal defects are inspected to ensure that the steel pipe meets quality standards.

Packaging and Shipping: The steel pipe is packaged and shipped in bundles, plastic packaging, or wooden crates.

Materials of Cold Drawn Seamless Tubes

Material Category

GB Grade (China)

ASTM/ASME Grade (USA)

Main Features

Carbon Steel

20#

ASTM A106 Gr.B / ASTM A53 Gr.B

For medium and low-pressure delivery, mechanical structures

Alloy Steel

15CrMo

ASTM A335 P12

High temperature and high pressure resistance, used in boilers and petrochemical industry

12CrMo

ASTM A335 P1

For high temperature steam and heat exchanger tubes

12Cr1MoV

ASTM A335 P11

High temperature strength, good creep resistance

Stainless Steel

304

ASTM A312 TP304

Corrosion and heat resistant, commonly used in food and chemical industries

304L

ASTM A312 TP304L

Low carbon, excellent intergranular corrosion resistance

316

ASTM A312 TP316

Excellent chloride corrosion resistance

316L

ASTM A312 TP316L

Low carbon, suitable for welding environments

321

ASTM A312 TP321

Titanium-stabilized, resists high-temperature intergranular corrosion

Surface Quality

The inner and outer surfaces of steel tubes should be smooth. The depth of local pits, scratches, and fine scratches should not exceed 0.08 mm. At these defective locations, the actual wall thickness of the steel

Tube should not be less than the minimum value allowed by the wall thickness deviation.

Defects on the inner and outer surfaces of steel tubes may be removed using appropriate methods. The actual wall thickness at the cleaned areas shall not be less than the minimum value allowed by the wall thickness deviation.

Steel pipes delivered in a cold-worked state may have residual phosphates produced during the manufacturing process on their surfaces. Steel pipes delivered in a heat-treated state may have an oxide film on their inner and outer surfaces that does not affect surface inspection.

· Process comparison:

Cold drawing: processed at room temperature, high dimensional accuracy, but low production efficiency.

Hot-rolled: High-temperature rolling, high production efficiency, but with oxide scale on the surface and lower precision.

· Appearance and Performance:

Cold-drawn tubes have a smooth surface and high gloss, while hot-rolled tubes have a rough surface and may have a decarburized layer.

The wall thickness deviation of cold-drawn tubes is reduced by 40% compared to hot-rolled tubes, and they have lower surface roughness.

Application Areas

Machinery Manufacturing: Used in the production of various mechanical components, such as hydraulic cylinder piston rods, pneumatic cylinder piston rods, and precision shafts. Its high precision and excellent mechanical properties ensure the assembly accuracy and operational reliability of components.

What Is A106B Galvanized Pipe?

ASTM A106B Galvanized Seamless Pipe means that dip A106B pipes into hot liquid zinc to form a coating at both the outside and the inside of the pipe. The process is called hot dip galvanization. The zinc coating prevent pipes away form corrosion and rust. The galvanized pipe shows long lasting durability, improved resistance to corrosion compared to other carbon steel pipes. Besides, they are still provided in a relatively cheap price with better performance.

Galvanized carbon steel pipes are commonly applied in sewerage applications, firefighting, and general plumbing systems.

Dimensional Inspection

Outside Diameter (OD): Measure the outside diameter of the pipe using calipers or a feeler gauge to ensure that it is within the tolerance allowed by ASTM A106B Galvanized Seamless Pipe(typically ±1% of OD or less).

Wall Thickness (WT): Measure the wall thickness of the pipe with an ultrasonic thickness gauge or gauge to ensure that it is not less than 12.5% underthickness of the nominal wall thickness.

Length: Check that the length of the tubing is as ordered.

Galvanizing Method

Hot-Dip Galvanizing: The steel pipe is immersed in molten zinc liquid to form a protective layer of zinc alloy and pure zinc on its surface. The coating formed in this way is thicker, has strong adhesion and good anti-corrosion effect. This is the most common way to galvanize steel pipes.

Electrogalvanizing: Galvanizing the surface of the steel pipe by electrochemical method, the coating is thinner and may look smoother, but the anti-corrosion performance is not as good as hot-dip galvanizing.

Why Galvanized?

ASTM A106B Galvanized Seamless Pipe can significantly improve their service life and environmental adaptability:

Enhanced corrosion resistance: suitable for hot, humid, acidic or salty environments

Low maintenance cost: the service life of the galvanized layer is up to 20~50 years

Beautiful appearance: bright surface, suitable for partially exposed pipes

Strong economical: lower cost compared with stainless steel pipes

Applications

Industrial boilers and heat exchange systems

Fluid transportation in the oil and gas industry

Condensate pipes for air conditioning systems

Fire protection pipe network systems

Pipes for buildings and structures

On May 20, 2025, our company received an inquiry from a new customer for carbon steel pipes and fittings. The customer listed the specifications, materials, quantity and related technical requirements of the flanges in detail in the email. After completing the quotation, the customer communicated with us about the specific details and placed an order with us.

ZIZI is a company specializing in the production and processing of pipes and fittings. The pipes and pipe fittings we produce are mainly used in chemical, petroleum, natural gas, water conservancy, electric power, marine engineering and other fields. The products mainly include seamless pipes, welded pipes, butt-welded pipe fittings, high-pressure forged pipe fittings and flanges of various sizes. The materials include carbon steel, stainless steel, alloy steel, low-temperature steel, duplex steel, base alloy, etc.

Inspection of Carbon Steel pipes

Outer diameter inspection:

Usually, an outside diameter micrometer or caliper is used to measure the steel pipe in different cross-sections and circumferential directions to check whether it is within the allowable tolerance range. For large-diameter steel pipes, ovality may also be checked.

Wall Thickness (WT) Inspection:

Measurement is carried out at different points of the steel pipe to ensure that the wall thickness is uniform and meets the minimum wall thickness requirements specified in the standard. The standard usually specifies the negative deviation of wall thickness (that is, the minimum allowable wall thickness) and the unevenness of wall thickness

Length (Length) Inspection:

According to the order requirements, verify whether the fixed length, multiple length or irregular length of the steel pipe meets the requirements.

Inspection of Butt Weld pipe fittings

Nominal diameter (DN) inspection

This is the key dimension for the connection between the pipe fittings and the pipeline. And it is necessary to check whether it is consistent with the order and design drawings. Center distance and height (applicable to elbows, tees, reducers, etc.):

Elbows: Check the center distance of the elbow, the bending radius and the angle (such as 45°, 90°, 180°).

Tee: Check the center distance between the main pipe and the branch pipe, as well as the size and angle of the branch pipe.

Reducers: Check the diameter and wall thickness of the large and small ends, as well as the length and taper of the reducing part.

JIS G3454 Carbon Steel Pipe is a Japanese standard for carbon steel pipes that are used for pressure conditions. These pipes are used in a variety of industries, including oil and gas, water supply, and construction.

Mechanical properties of JIS G3454 can be varied greatly by heat treatment. Through a controlled cycle of heating and cooling, certain desired properties are obtained by producing predictable changes in the microstructure of the steel.

JIS G3454 carbon steel pipes are manufactured as per JIS Specifications. JIS G3454 carbon steel pipes’ mechanical properties can be varied greatly by heat treatment. JIS G3454 carbon steel pipe specification covers carbon steel pipe for machine structural purposes. JIS G3454 carbon steel pipes are used for pressure conditions at a limited maximum temperature of 350℃.

What does JIS stand for in steel?

Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS) (日本産業規格, Nihon Sangyō Kikaku, formerly 日本工業規格 Nihon Kōgyō Kikaku until June 30, 2019) are the standards used for industrial activities in Japan, coordinated by the Japanese Industrial Standards Committee (JISC) and published by the Japanese Standards Association (JSA).

JIS stands for Japanese Industrial Standards, which are used to define steel grades in Japan. JIS standards are also used in other industrial applications in Asia and the Pacific.

How are JIS standards used?

JIS steel specifications have been used as a base for other national systems, such as Korean, Chinese, and Taiwanese.

JIS standards enhance production efficiency by streamlining production processes, lowering costs, and optimizing operations.

What material is JIS G3454?

JIS G3454 applies to carbon steel pipes used in high-temperature and high-pressure applications. The standard covers seamless and welded pipes. Materials: The primary materials include various grades of carbon steel that meet the mechanical and chemical requirements specified in the standard.

JIS G3454 Carbon Steel Grade STPG 370 Specification Covers Carbon Steel Tubes for Pressure Service. ZIZI offer CS JIS G3454 available grades STPG 410, STPG 370 and a diverse range of finish options to meet the appearance requirements and performance for most applications.

What is the meaning of STPG pipe?

“STPG pipe” refers to a carbon steel pipe for pressure service, where “STPG” stands for “Steel Tube Piping General” – essentially indicating a type of steel pipe suitable for high-pressure applications, typically following the Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) G3454 specification:

Material: Carbon steel

Application: Used in situations requiring high pressure, like oil and gas pipelines, chemical processing, and power generation

Standard: Usually follows the JIS G3454 standard

Manufacturing process: Can be either seamless or welded depending on the specific application and grade.

What is the pressure rating of JIS?

In the JIS standard, the pressure rating is typically denoted by a “K” value, where “10K” indicates a pressure rating of 10 kg/cm² (kilograms per square centimeter), meaning a JIS 10K flange can withstand a pressure of 10 kg/cm²; other common JIS pressure ratings include 5K, 16K, 20K, 30K, and 63K depending on the specific application.

“K” signifies pressure:

The “K” in “JIS 10K” represents the pressure rating in kilograms per square centimeter.

Varying pressure levels:

Different “K” values indicate different pressure capabilities, with higher “K” numbers signifying higher pressure resistance.

Carbon steel seamless pipe is a hollow cross-section and no welds around it. It‘s made of carbon steel and processed perforation, hot rolling, or cold rolling to form seamless steel pipes. It have strong pressure bearing capacity, stable quality, good corrosion resistance, and strong mechanical properties. Their main materials include ASMT A106 GR B, API 5L GR B, ASTM A53 GR B, ASTM A333 GR6, etc. Carbon steel seamless pipe is widely used in petroleum, chemical, shipbuilding, nuclear power and machinery manufacturing.

Carbon steel seamless pipe is widely used, so ensuring the quality has always been a concern for customers. To ensure that their quality and performance meet usage requirements, a series of experiments and inspections are required. Today we will introduce some common methods for testing carbon steel seamless pipes.

Chemical Composition Analysis

We delivered them to Guangzhou warehouse in very short time because our large stock for these special pipe thickness.

The pipe Schedule describes the pipe wall thickness. In same size, the thickness in mm will be larger while pipe schedule number increases. It just affect the inside diameter only. Usually The double Extra Strong (XXS) wall is thicker than SCH 160 from NPS 1/2 to NPS 6, but SCH 160 is thicker than the XXS wall from NPS 8 to NPS 12.
