<p>2507 stainless steel pipe (also known as Super Duplex 2507) is a super <a href="https://www.zzfittings.com/uns-s31803-duplex-stainless-steel-pipe/">duplex stainless steel</a> with very high strength and excellent corrosion resistance. It combines the duplex structure of austenite and ferrite, and adds a higher proportion of chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), molybdenum (Mo) and nitrogen (N) to its composition, so it has very superior mechanical properties and corrosion resistance.</p>



<p>In particular, the&nbsp;Super Duplex 2507 Seamless Tubing&nbsp;is very resilient to chloride stress corrosion cracking, which is a cause for failure in austenitic stainless steel alloys like 304 or even alloy 316. An important characteristic of the&nbsp;2507 super duplex stainless steel tubes&nbsp;is that they have a low coefficient of thermal expansion. This property is vital to tubes and pipes mainly in industries that use elevated temperature, or those industries where the&nbsp;Alloy 2507 super duplex tubing&nbsp;is involved in exothermic reactions that give off very high levels of thermal energy.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-corrosion-resistance-of-duplex-stainless-steel">Corrosion Resistance of Duplex stainless steel</h4>



<p>Duplex stainless steel are extremely corrosion resistant. They have high resistance to intergranular corrosion. Even in chloride and sulphide environments, Duplex stainless steel exhibit very high resistance to stress corrosion cracking.</p>

<p>Although welding of 2507 requires careful control of heat input, proper filler materials, and possibly post-weld heat treatment (PWHT), it is still relatively easy to weld compared to other high-alloy materials.</p>

<p>While not as heat-resistant as certain austenitic stainless steels or superalloys, 2507 performs well up to 600°C (1112°F). It maintains high strength and corrosion resistance in high-temperature environments, such as chemical reactors or heat exchangers.</p>

<p><strong>Corrosion Resistance:</strong><strong></strong></p>



<p>2205:</p>



<p>Excellent resistance to general corrosion, pitting, and crevice corrosion in a wide range of environments, including marine, chemical, and food processing environments.</p>



<p>It performs well in environments with chloride ions but has lower resistance to highly corrosive environments like acid-rich or seawater settings compared to 2507.</p>



<p>2507:</p>



<p>Superior resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking (SCC), especially in chloride-rich environments (e.g., seawater).</p>



<p>It excels in extreme environments, including offshore and marine applications, where exposure to highly corrosive environments is a concern.</p>



<p>2507 is often considered the go-to choice for more aggressive applications where higher corrosion resistance is needed, such as deep-sea oil drilling or desalination plants.</p>



<p><strong>Weldability:</strong><strong></strong></p>



<p>2205:</p>



<p>It has good weldability, but care must be taken during welding to avoid excessive heat input and to maintain the duplex structure.</p>



<p>Preheating and post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) are usually not required for 2205.</p>



<p>2507:</p>



<p>2507 has more stringent welding requirements due to its higher alloy content and susceptibility to issues like embrittlement if not welded properly.</p>



<p>Specialized welding electrodes and procedures are required, and post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) is generally recommended to maintain the mechanical and corrosion resistance properties.</p>

<p>The chromium content of S31803 is roughly between 21 and 23%. The chromium content of <a href="https://www.zzfittings.com/uns-s32205-duplex-stainless-steel-pipe/">S32205</a> duplex stainless steel pipe&nbsp;is about 22 to 23%. The relatively higher chromium content of S2205 helps improve its corrosion resistance in more severe environments.</p>



<p>The molybdenum content of S31803 is around 2.5 &#8211; 3.5%, while the molybdenum content of S2205 is different. The difference in molybdenum content will affect the material&#8217;s resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. In addition, other trace elements and their proportions in the two alloys will also cause differences in performance.</p>

<p>As duplex stainless steels evolved, their initial specification was captured as UNS S31803. However, many leading manufacturers have been producing this grade to the upper end of the permissible specification. This reflects their desire to maximize the corrosion performance of the alloy, aided by the development of the AOD steelmaking process, which allows for tighter control of composition. In addition, it also allows for the level of nitrogen additions to be influenced, rather than just being present as a background element.</p>



<p>As a result, the highest performing duplex grades seek to maximize the levels of chromium (Cr), molybdenum (Mo), and nitrogen (N). Based on the formula&nbsp;PREN = %Cr + 3.3 %Mo + 16 % N, the difference between a duplex alloy that meets the bottom of the specification and one that reaches the top of the specification can be several pips.</p>



<p>In order to differentiate duplex stainless steels produced at the high end of the composition range, a further specification was introduced, UNS S32205. Duplex stainless steels manufactured under the S32205 heading will fully comply with the S31803 heading, while the reverse is not true. Therefore, the S32205 can be dual-certified as an S31803.</p>
